On The Rise

04.05.2023

Hovercraft Studio helped Jordan take over Concepts in Boston for the Tatum 1 sneaker launch. The store was temporarily redesigned around the concept of a classic Boston news stand, with custom newspapers, magazines, and other messaging that celebrated Jayson Tatum's rise and success.

I was tasked with building software for two separate interactive vignettes that reinforced the larger "news" story. I also specced hardware and worked with the fabrication team to ensure a successful installation. My work was completed in 2 weeks before launch.

Interactive Book

The more complex interactive piece was a projection-mapped book that highlighted the Tatum story and sneaker. There were (3) two-page layouts, each with a set of animated elements and custom transition animations. Using a Realsense camera and a threaded OCR library, I detected which direction the page was turned, and confirmed which content should appear by "reading" the printed number on the page when it settled.

Newspaper Box

The second interactive moment took form as a highly stylized newspaper box that would normally be found on a city street. Instead of housing a stack of custom newspapers about Tatum, one of the boxes had a screen and speakers inside. As the door opened, the next video in a playlist of Tatum marketing videos would play. When the door closed, the video would turn off.
